Comprehensive Eye Care, Since the Hospital's Earliest Years
Eye care has been offered at Mangala Hospital since the hospital's earliest years, and in 1990 that care was organised into a dedicated programme — the Mangala Eye Foundation — under the motto "Vision Our Mission." The Foundation covers the full spectrum of ophthalmic care, from routine vision correction and refraction to advanced retinal, vitreous and corneal surgery.
The Foundation has a track record of bringing new ophthalmic technology to Mangalore, including a German Moller Wedel operating microscope dedicated to eye surgery and Laser DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy) — a bloodless, outpatient laser procedure for blocked tear ducts that was the first of its kind offered in the city. It is also one of a small number of hospitals in Mangalore formally recognised by the Government of India for corneal transplant surgery.
Beyond adult eye care, the Foundation offers paediatric eye care and oculoplasty, and manages ocular trauma round the clock — supported by Mangala Hospital's own paramedical training institutions, including the Mangala College of Optometry, which trains optometrists in vision testing, low-vision aids and post-surgical vision rehabilitation. This teaching connection means the Foundation's diagnostic work is grounded in current optometric practice as well as ophthalmic surgery.

From Routine Vision Care to Complex Surgery
Phacoemulsification & Lens Implantation
Cataract surgery is performed by phacoemulsification — a micro-incisional, sutureless technique in which the clouded natural lens is broken up and removed through a very small opening, then replaced with an intraocular lens. This approach means less trauma to the eye, a quicker visual recovery, and a same-day or short-stay procedure for most patients, done under our dedicated Moller Wedel operating microscope.
Laser DCR for Blocked Tear Ducts
Laser Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) uses a German diode laser to correct persistent watering of the eye caused by a blocked tear duct, by creating a new drainage channel between the tear sac and the nasal cavity. It is a bloodless, outpatient procedure — introduced at Mangala Hospital as the first facility of its kind in the city — that avoids the external scar associated with traditional DCR surgery.
Complex Eye Surgery & Corneal Transplant
Beyond routine care, the Foundation supports retinal and vitreous surgery and the evaluation of patients who may require corneal transplantation. Anti-glaucoma surgery, squint correction and oculoplasty are coordinated alongside paediatric eye care for younger patients who need age-appropriate assessment.
