Urological care has been part of Mangala Hospital since it first opened, and in 1990 that expertise was brought together as the Mangala Kidney Foundation — a dedicated programme for kidney and urinary tract disease that our Urology department forms the surgical core of. Over more than three decades it has grown into one of the more technologically advanced urology units in Dakshina Kannada, built specifically around minimally invasive stone management.
The department was among the earliest centres in India to introduce Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy. Current stone care is led by RIRS, flexible ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy, Mini-PCNL and PCNL, allowing treatment to be matched to the stone's size, location and complexity.
Beyond stone disease, the department manages the full range of urinary tract and male reproductive conditions, and works in close daily coordination with our Nephrology and Dialysis teams under the Mangala Kidney Foundation umbrella — so a patient moving from medical management into surgery, dialysis or transplant work-up stays within one coordinated team.

Fine laser fibres fragment kidney and ureteric stones through a controlled photo-thermal effect. Combined with ureteroscopy, the technique supports precise stone clearance with minimal injury to surrounding tissue. Most suitable patients benefit from smaller access routes, reduced post-procedure discomfort and an earlier return to normal activity.
A flexible ureteroscope reaches the ureter, renal pelvis and difficult kidney calyces through natural passages. It is also used to evaluate haematuria, papillary abnormalities and selected urothelial tumours. Because no external incision is required, RIRS can offer a shorter hospital stay and a smoother recovery for appropriately selected cases.
Mini-PCNL and PCNL remove large or complex stones through a small image-guided access tract. The approach is selected according to stone size, position and density, kidney anatomy and the patient's overall health.
