Overview

Clinical Laboratory at Mangala Hospital

Nearly every diagnosis and treatment decision at Mangala Hospital passes through our Clinical Laboratory at some point — a blood count before surgery, a kidney or liver panel for a Nephrology patient, or a culture ordered from Casualty at two in the morning. Our lab is fully computerised and operates 24 hours a day, so results move quickly from sample to report, whatever time a patient walks in.

The lab is built around automated auto analysers for routine chemistry and haematology, fluorescent microscopy for detailed cell and organism identification, an ELISA reader for immunoassay-based testing, and an electrolyte analyser for rapid sodium, potassium and related measurements — the kind of test that matters most when a critically ill patient in the ICU or CCU needs an answer within minutes, not hours. For patients who cannot travel easily, the department also offers a home sample collection service, so routine blood work doesn't require a hospital visit at all.

Because the lab runs around the clock, it directly supports every other department at Mangala Hospital — pre-operative work-up for surgery, ongoing monitoring for dialysis and ICU patients, and everyday outpatient tests ordered by our General Medicine and speciality consultants alike.

Inside Our Laboratory

Automated Chemistry

Auto Analysers for Routine & Specialised Panels

Automated auto analysers process routine chemistry and haematology tests — blood counts, kidney and liver panels, blood sugar and lipid profiles — with consistent accuracy at volume. This is the backbone of day-to-day testing, supporting everything from a pre-operative work-up in General Surgery to ongoing monitoring for our Nephrology and Dialysis patients.

Microscopy

Fluorescent Microscopy

Fluorescent microscopy allows our technicians to identify cells, organisms and abnormal structures with greater clarity than standard light microscopy, supporting more precise microbiology and cell-pathology reporting for infections and other conditions that need a closer look.

ELISA & Electrolytes

Immunoassay & Rapid Electrolyte Testing

An ELISA reader supports immunoassay-based testing for a range of infections and markers, while a dedicated electrolyte analyser gives rapid sodium, potassium and related readings — critical for patients in the ICU, CCU and Dialysis Unit, where electrolyte swings need to be caught and corrected quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's prescription to get a lab test done?+

Most tests are done on a doctor's request so the right panel is chosen for your symptoms, but many routine tests such as a blood count or blood sugar check can also be done as a walk-in. Ask our lab desk to confirm.

Do I need to fast before a blood test?+

Some tests, such as fasting blood sugar and lipid profile, require 8-12 hours of fasting beforehand. Our lab staff will confirm the requirement when your test is booked.

How does home sample collection work?+

Call our hospital number to arrange a visit. A trained technician collects your sample at home following the same protocols used in the hospital lab, and your report is processed through our 24-hour laboratory as normal.

How long does it take to get results?+

Reporting time depends on the investigation and clinical priority. The laboratory team can advise when a sample is collected, while urgent hospital tests are prioritised for the treating team.

Is the lab open at night and on holidays?+

Yes, the Clinical Laboratory operates 24 hours a day, every day, to support Casualty, inpatient wards and critical care units around the clock.

Are laboratory tests covered by insurance?+

Yes, diagnostic testing is generally covered as part of your overall treatment under most cashless and reimbursement mediclaim plans. See our Insurance page or check with our billing desk.
